A Liturgy for Resistance

Gathering Words
Nebuchadnezzar is the only superpower left…He imagines himself at the center…ready to impose his purpose by every coercive means necessary. Such a superpower can do a lot of good. Such an order will work all right – except for this odd community of believers that has a First Commandment in its craw, this odd rule of exclusivity that precludes signing on for any other loyalty. This community, embodied by Shadrach and his friends, has ringing in its ears, “Thou shalt have no other God.

Naming the Idols
Consider, in a moment of silence, how the idols of our culture have infiltrated you, your family, your community, your church. Speak the names of these idols aloud, sharing with those gathered with you. You may wish to offer only a name, or perhaps also to say a brief word about how that idol has gotten hold of you.

“But If Not…”
With a neighbor, talk about what defiance is like. Do you recall a moment from your life where you defied authority? What happened? How did it feel? What gave you the resolve to act in the way?
Silence
Scripture Reading Daniel 3: 19-30
While the scripture is read, stand close to the fire. Place your hand up to it, close enough to feel its heat.

Reflections
How does this story stir within you today? What response does it call forth?
Closing Prayer: O Lord God Almighty, as you have taught us to call the evening, the morning, and the noonday one day. You have made the sun to know its going down and its rising. Dispel now the darkness of our hearts, that by your brightness we may know you to be the true God and eternal light, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen
