Douglas Avilesbernal, MDiv, has been called by God to be a bridge between two different worlds with many different cultures and two different languages. He is the son of missionaries, having been born in Guatemala, Central America, and his faith spans three decades, several continents, and many nations and the requisite number of schools, culminating in his 2005 Graduation from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is currently the executive minister of the Evergreen Baptist Association of American Baptist Churches and previously served as Senior Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church of Norristown in Norristown, PA. Doug is a popular speaker and published author whose most recent published work is, Welcoming Community: Diversity that Works, Judson Press (2016). Douglas Avilesbernal, Maestro en Divinidad, ha sido llamado por Dios para ser un puente entre dos mundos diferentes con muchas culturas diferentes y dos idiomas diferentes. Es hijo de misioneros, nació en Guatemala, América Central, y su fe abarca tres décadas, varios continentes, muchas naciones y el número requerido de escuelas, culminando en su graduación en 2005 del Seminario Teológico Bautista del Este en Filadelfia, Pensilvania. Actualmente es el ministro ejecutivo de la Asociación Bautista Evergreen de American Baptist Churches, y anteriormente se desempeñó como Pastor Principal en la Iglesia Bautista Calvary de Norristown en Norristown, PA. Doug es un orador popular, autor de varios libros cuyo trabajo publicado más reciente es Welcoming Community: Diversity that Works (Comunidad acogedora: diversidad que funciona), Judson Press (2016). Más allá de las barreras: Sobre las alas del Espíritu
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Is. 40:31, NIV)
The verb yaalu ּin Hebrew comes from the root alah- meaning to climb or ascend. In this sense it is more than flying. It is to go up the highest currents of the wind like an eagle.
It is a verb with a great variety of meanings, literal and figurative. It also has its roots in the Hebrew word olah, meaning a burnt offering or sacrifice; in offering our full souls/selves in worship to the Lord. Additionally, it carries the meaning of going to meet or visit someone in personal relationships.
In English a verb equivalent to the Hebrew meaning is to soar “to rise or increase position dramatically… to ascend to a higher or more exalted level (according to Merriam Webster Dictionary)And a synonym for soar in this setting is "to give wings" (dar alas), which is in tune with both the Hebrew and English expressions.
This year, how will we continue going beyond barriers? How will we Go Beyond our first virtual conference from last year – even as we are still in the midst of a pandemic, and one that has and continues to unveil the extreme violence, injustice and inequalities through economic, emotional and spiritual crises - we want and can go further. And this is the answer: To soar in the power of the Spirit – in community; because in this time we’ve discovered that we have not been alone and we need each other. The community that supports itself at all times, that follows and firmly believes that another world is possible; Only with the movement and the breath of the Spirit we will reach unimaginable places.
Beyond barriers: Soaring in the Spirit / Más allá de las barreras: Sobre las alas del Espíritu: with resistance and hope, in constant movement. Yes, beyond barriers, because we trust in God and because of this, our strength will be renewed: new wings, new dreams, new challenges for this new reality of a world that is in need of rest and healing.

Beyond barriers: Soaring in the Spirit
“Pero los que confían en el Señor renovarán sus fuerzas; volarán como las águilas: correrán y no se fatigarán, caminarán y no se cansarán.” (Is. 40:31, NVI)
El verbo yaalu en hebreo proviene de la raíz alah que significasubir, ascender, trepar. En este versículo sugiere algo más que volar. Es remontar las corrientes mas altas del viento como un águila.
Es un verbo con gran variedad de sentidos, literal y figurativo. Su raíz también está relacionada con el movimiento de subida del holocausto y con el subir el alma en adoración al Señor -olah.También conlleva el sentido de ir a conocer o visitar a alguien en las relaciones personales.
En español, un verbo equivalente a la acepción hebrea es impulsar, “fuerza que hace moverse a un cuerpo”, “deseo o motivo afectivo que induce a hacer algo.” “dar empuje para producir movimiento” (según la RAE). Y un sinónimo de impulsar es “dar alas”, lo cual sintoniza tanto con la expresión hebrea, como en inglés.
¿Cómo seguiremos más allá de las barreras? Más allá de nuestra primera conferencia virtual del año pasado…aún en medio de una pandemia que no termina, y que acrecienta situaciones límites de violencia, injusticia, desigualdad, crisis económica, emocional, espiritual -queremos y podemos ir más allá. Y esta es la respuesta, impulsando y remontando el vuelo en la fuerza del Espíritu – en comunidad; porque en este tiempo descubrimos que no hemos estado solos y solas, nos necesitamos unos a otros. La comunidad que se apoya en todo momento, que sigue y cree firmemente que otro mundo es posible; solo con el movimiento y el soplo del Espíritu llegaremos a lugares inimaginables.
Más allá de las barreras: Sobre las alas del Espíritu / Beyond barriers: Soaring in the Spirit:con resistencia y esperanza, en constante movimiento. Sí, más allá de las barreras, porque confiamos en Dios y por esto, nuestras fuerzas serán renovadas: alas nuevas, nuevos sueños, nuevos desafíos para esta nueva realidad de un mundo urgido de descanso y sanidad.

About the Design: The design is inspired by the hummingbird since it's a very significant bird among Indigenous peoples. It's said that the hummingbird connects with both the sky and the earth, carrying thoughts of love. Likewise, it does not know borders or barriers, it flies in full freedom and, connecting with the theme of the conference, it represents that desire for a world without borders.
About the Designer: Eleazar Pérez Encino is a Comprehensive Community Promoter in the Territory Defense area at the Center for Ecumenical Studies (CEE) in Mexico City. In this area, CEE accompanies communities in land defense, use and enjoyment - constructing alternative economies, politics and cultures to promote lifestyles of dignity, solidarity and sustainability. Eleazar has a university degree in Sustainable Development from the Intercultural University of Chiapas, and a bachelor's degree in Intercultural Theology from the Mayan Intercultural Seminary.

Sobre el diseño: El diseño está inspirada en el colibrí ya que es una de las aves muy representativas entre los pueblos indígenas, se dice que el colibrí se conecta con el cielo y la tierra, llevando pensamientos de amor, así mismo, el no conoce fronteras ni barreras, vuela en plena libertad, y conectando con el tema de la conferencia, responde a ese deseo de un mundo sin fronteras.
Sobre el diseñador: Eleazar Pérez Encino es promotor comunitario Integral en el área de Defensa del Territorio en el Centro de Estudios Ecuménicos (CEE) de la ciudad de México. En esta área, el CEE acompaña a las comunidades en la defensa, uso y aprovechamiento de la tierra, construyendo economías, políticas y culturas alternativas para promover estilos de vida de dignidad, solidaridad y sostenibilidad. Eleazar tiene un título universitario en Desarrollo Sostenible de la Universidad Intercultural de Chiapas, y una licenciatura en Teología Intercultural en el Seminario Intercultural Mayense.

About the Design: Today, the concept of walls does not only mean a physical, vertical object that limits a physical space, be it a property or a geographical region. It is also something that keeps someone or something from advancing and evolving, be it of a social, psychological or ideological nature. The concept of globalization, in many spaces is seen as a social and economic advance, in which everyone can have similar opportunities. However, many people are left out - their histories, beliefs, ideals, even their dreams. This creates walls around us, to enclose both those who are considered worthy of protection and safety and those who considered different and dangerous. Something that breaks barriers in a world where sometimes we have so many walls that surround us, is the communion between people, holding the hand of God. However, it is not only about holding hands, it is about activating and coloring the world, decorating those walls, using them to our advantage and eventually demolishing them. Behind each wall, there is a victory and a new path toward this communion of the people of God, which little by little, shares its color in this diverse society that needs to look at itself and admire what it is and what it has in its heart, the spirit of God.

Sobre el diseño: Hoy en día, el concepto de muros no solo se significa a un objeto físico, vertical, que limita un espacio físico, sea una propiedad, una región geográfica. Se ha resignificado como todo aquello que detiene un proceso, un avance, una evolución, sea de índole social, psicológicos, ideal; se ha resignificado a todo aquello que encierra al ser humano. El concepto de globalización, en muchos espacios se ve como un avance social y económico, en el que todos podrán tener similitud de oportunidades. Sin embargo, se dejan fuera muchas cualidades de la gente, sus raíces, sus credos, sus ideales, hasta sus sueños. Esto genera muros alrededor de ellos, para encerrar, tanto a quienes “les conviene” y mantenerlos “seguros”, como a quienes “son diferentes” y pueden “ser peligrosos”. “El muro de Berlín no se cayó pidiéndolo de favor” Algo que rompe barreras en un mundo, en el que en cada persona un muro se convierte en un edificio, y que en ocasiones son tantos que nos rodean, es la comunión entre personas, agarradas de la mano de Dios. No obstante, el trabajo no solo se queda en estar tomados de la mano, es accionar y colorear el mundo, decorar esos muros, visualizarlos como apoyo, y al final cuando ya no funcionan más, derribarlos. Detrás de cada muro, hay una victoria y un nuevo camino hacia la comunión del pueblo de Dios, que poco a poco, comparte su color, en esta sociedad diversa y que necesita de mirarse y admirarse de lo que es y que tiene en el corazón, el espíritu de Dios.

About the Design: It's based on images that appear on Israel's Separation Wall which was built to keep Palestinians from accessing many things. There are several places where artists have drawn people climbing stairs, or going over a bridge, or even opening a window or a zipper to get to the other side. This is done in the view of guard towers that loom above the walls. By the way, the US WILPF Middle East Committee, which I co-chair, has a current campaign called "Bridges Not Walls". We note that separation makes people understand one another less, and that we need to build bridges of understanding between people as we break down the many walls that separate them.

Sobre el diseño: Se basa en imágenes que aparecen en el Muro de Separación de Israel, que fue construido para evitar que los palestinos accedan a muchas cosas. Hay varios lugares donde los artistas han dibujado a personas subiendo escaleras, pasando por un puente, o incluso abriendo una ventana o una cremallera para llegar al otro lado. Esto se hace a la vista de las torres de vigilancia que se ciernen sobre los muros. Por cierto, el Comité de Medio Oriente de la WILPF de EE. UU., Que soy copresidente, tiene una campaña actual llamada "Puentes, no muros". About the Design: Inspired by the Beyond Barriers theme, the design is intended to be evocative of a wall. However with the growth on the front of the wall and the spirit emerging from behind the wall, the barrier nature of the wall is being diminished. I utilized the colors from the Summer Conference announcement for the lower half and a "new day" sunrise for the upper half.

Utilicé los colores del anuncio de la Conferencia de Verano para la mitad inferior y un amanecer de "nuevo día" para la mitad superior.

Historical setting
I had an accident in 1999, I fell from a height on a spiral staircase, at work. I broke the tibia and fibula in my left leg and the doctors fixed it with a plate and 6 screws; They unjustifiably fired me from that job, and I did not walk for 6 months, stating that I could not walk well again, or run, much less wear heels. I sank until I received a stomach wash; Saved and with a whole future I was able to overcome such pain. I managed to walk, run and even wear heels, and without knowing him I can still confirm that the Lord Jesus was already present in my life.
Brief explanation of my drawing
The light blue color of the left foot shows the day and the navy blue of the right foot the night. The colors simulate the rainbow where I remember that the pact of God is present with Humanity, the yellow harmonized with the red and orange colors of the background , they show the presence of the Holy Spirit to be able to walk wherever with HIM, in freedom, safety and protection, etc. With immense gratitude to God I can say that He has guided every step. I have walked and walked for hours and I have discovered that God always goes with me, The Lord Jesus has been present through the good times and the worst. I am a Walker, and I have confirmed that walking is a secret ingredient for success, for renewal in life and to have the freedom to walk with the Holy Spirit without limits, without sadness, without any of the barriers. I believe that my feet They are like the wings of the eagle. Well, we can walk on the land, the sea, the sand, in the mud, on the stones and even in the clouds, I can imagine, that is the secret of how and with whom to walk to leave that footprint that motivates, encourages and accompanies each instant. Marco histórico
Tuve un accidente en 1999, me caí de un piso de altura en una escalera tipo caracol, en un trabajo. Me rompí tibia y peroné de la pierna izquierda y los médicos lo arreglaron con una placa y 6 tornillos; me despidieron injustificadamente de ese trabajo, y estuve 6 meses sin caminar, afirmando que no podría volver a caminar bien, o correr ni mucho menos usar tacones. Me hundí hasta recibir un lavado de estómago; Salvada y con todo un futuro pude superar tal pena. Logré caminar, correr y hasta usar tacones y yo sin conocerle aún puedo confirmar que el Señor Jesús ya estaba presente en mi vida.
Breve Explicación de mi dibujo
El color azul claro del pie izquierdo muestra el día y el azul marino del pie derecho la noche. Los colores simulan el arcoíris en donde recuerdo que el pacto de Dios está presente con la Humanidad, el amarillo armonizado con los colores rojos y naranjas del fondo, muestran la presencia del Espíritu Santo para poder caminar en donde sea con ÉL, en libertad, seguridad y protección, etc. Con inmensa gratitud a Dios puedo decir que ha guiado cada paso. He caminado y caminado por horas y he descubierto que siempre va conmigo, El Señor Jesús ha estado presente en las buenas en las malas y en las peores. Soy una Caminante, y he confirmado que caminar es un ingrediente secreto para el éxito, para la renovación en la vida y para tener la libertad de andar con El Espíritu Santo sin límites, sin tristezas, sin ninguna de las barreras. Creo que mis pies son como las alas del águila. Pues podemos caminar en la tierra, el mar, la arena, en el lodo, sobre las piedras y hasta en las nubes, puedo imaginar, he ahí el secreto de Cómo y con quién caminar para dejar esa huella que motive, aliente y acompañe cada instante. Bautistas por la paz, me ha motivado a seguir caminando. Dios les siga bendiciendo grandemente.
