About THe Workshop
Once seen, it is impossible to forget the look on the face of Derek Chauvin as he leaned his knee into the neck of George Floyd for nine minutes and 26 seconds. His face says it all as he stared almost placidly into the faces of onlookers, one of them recording his actions: I get to do this. And I can do so with impunity. Because that’s the way it is. The same idea of unfettered power imbued the European conquistadores of the 15th century onward and their Popes who handed them a power that was not theirs, a power to subdue, dominate, dispossess and appropriate. How did this happen? In this work shop we will look at concepts of unconscious bias, the invention of ‘White’, the definition and social constructs of racism, how it plays out in our societies in the 21st century and what it takes to become the anti-racist activists we want to be.

Una vez visto, es imposible olvidar la expresión del rostro de Derek Chauvin mientras presionaba su rodilla contra el cuello de George Floyd durante nueve minutos y 26 segundos. Su rostro lo dice todo mientras miraba casi plácidamente los rostros de las espectadores, una de ellos registrando sus acciones: Puedo hacer esto. Y puedo hacerlo con impunidad. Porque así es. La misma idea de poder sin restricciones imbuyó a los conquistadores europeos del siglo XV en adelante y a sus Papas, quienes les entregaron un poder que no era el suyo, un poder para someter, dominar, desposeer y apropiarse. ¿Cómo pasó esto? En este taller analizaremos los conceptos de sesgo inconsciente, la invención de 'blanco' como categoría de humanidad, la definición y las construcciones sociales del racismo, cómo se desarrolla en nuestras sociedades en el siglo XXI y qué se necesita para convertirse en un activista antirracista queremos ser.

Rev. LeeAnn McKenna is an ordained Baptist minister, former board and staff of the BPFNA. For over 30 years, LeeAnn has worked with communities at risk or those recovering from or in the midst of civil conflict, creating new pathways to peace. She is the founding executive director of Partera Peacebuilders International. The name means midwife in Spanish and describes a method of training in conflict transformation that places the facilitator firmly in the role of companion to communities in the process of birthing the future for which they yearn. She is a prolific writer, a recent recipient of an Associated Church Press award. She and her husband, Jeffrey, live on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation/ Mohawk. She is Granny to Owen and Morgan.

Durante más de 30 años, LeeAnn ha trabajado con comunidades en riesgo o recuperándose o en medio de conflicto civil, creando nuevos caminos hacia la paz. Es la directora ejecutiva fundadora de Partera Internacional hacedores de la paz. El nombre significa comadrona en español y describe un método de formación en transformación de conflictos que coloca a la facilitadora firmemente en el papel de acompañante de las comunidades en el proceso de dar a luz el futuro que anhelan. Es una escritora prolífica, ganadora reciente de un premio de Associated Church Press. Ella y su esposo, Jeffrey, viven en el territorio tradicional de Kanien'kehá: ka Nation / Mohawk. Ella es abuelita de Owen y Morgan.
