A statement from BPFNA-Bautistas por la Paz

Today and in those to come, we are called to live in the fullness of our commitment to our Christian values and our humanity. We are called to be Be more, to Be patient, to Become peacemakers in the midst of a difficult time. In this moment know that the power of the Spirit moves among us even in chaotic situations.

As we continue to monitor inconclusive election results this morning, it’s even more important to make sure every voice is heard. As peacemakers, we must demand that all votes are counted as it is a matter of justice.

With more people choosing to protect their health and the safety of others this year by voting by mail, we knew there was a good possibility that results would not be conclusive on election night. Despite some politicians trying to rush a decision and declare victory around this election, we must remember that there is no rule or law saying a winner must be determined on election day. This is not the first time we’ve been here, and we must honor and defend the democratic process by counting every vote. Some states could not even begin counting mail-in ballots until after polls closed. We’ve already heard that some states might not have final results until later this week. However, it is also ok and natural to feel nervous and on edge right now with so much on the line.

It’s important to stay hopeful and take care of yourself and others during this time. Because the Spirit accompanies us, we can find peace in the storm, we can find a space to rest, a space to breathe. So give yourself time to find your center, to ground your heart, to dance with the Spirit.

Remember that election officials have the responsibility to make sure all votes are counted before a winner is announced. While we all want to know the outcome, this delay should reassure us that all voices are being heard. While we wait, we need to keep in mind that candidates or media do not get to decide who wins and that each of us needs to do our part to demand that all of our neighbor’s votes are counted.

Here are some ways you can help stay active to keep defending democracy:

  • Make a plan to mobilize: Protect the Results is organizing people across the country to make sure all votes are counted. Find an action or event happening near you.

Today and in those to come, keep the vision of a better world, one that you have already been creating in community with others, with small acts of gentleness, with fierce resistance, with prophetic actions for peace with justice and love. Let us all rest in the embrace of a God that hears our voices and walks with us.
