COVID-19 has brought us truly unprecedented times that no one saw coming. Apparently overnight, the world as we knew it changed.

Amid fear, uncertainty, and rapidly changing information, there are many inspiring stories of everyday heroes who have restored faith in humanity. Emerging from chaos and confusion, the "common people" have given all the goodness in their hearts, and have even given their lives!

As is often the case in a crisis, this coronavirus pandemic has revealed the true character of many people. Although there are many negative and discouraging stories, there are also countless inspiring stories that have emerged in the past few weeks of people doing what they can to help others, including neighbors and friends, as well as complete strangers. One of those inspiring stories occurred in the city where I live: Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

On Thursday, April 30 and for the sixth consecutive time, the seafood restaurant "La Posta" delivered food to people affected by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and, on this occasion, dedicated something special to the boys and girls on the occasion of Children's Day, who gave them a bag of sweets and a cake for dessert.

Hundreds of people people who have lost their employment due to the Covid-19 pandemic come to the restaurant for these weekly food donations.

The business owner Alfredo Villanueva Zúñiga, accompanied by his wife Ana María Guerrero Ortiz, reported, "We do it with all our heart and with the support of friends, employees and families who have shown solidarity with people who do not have a fixed income. Everything is to help the people who are living hand to mouth.”

The power of goodness is very broad, it has the quality of keeping us in touch with ourselves and making us focus our attention on the well-being of others. It can arise in each of the human interactions through solidarity, service, consideration and also compassion.

This pandemic that affects everyone requires us to use the power of goodness.

Those of us who can stay isolated in our homes can capitalize the time to live in peace with our families, while finding ways to help others. To spread love also towards our neighbors, reaching out to those who need it. There is always the possibility of bringing out the best in us and ourselves, being friendly, hospitable, fraternal and supportive beings.

Let us remember the words of the apostle Paul, who says in Romans 12:18 (NIV), "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." And also those of our Lord Jesus Christ, in Mark 9: 39-41 (NIV):

“no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me,  Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.”
