Doris Garcia Rivera selected as lecturer for HTI's 25th Anniversary! • ¡Doris García Rivera seleccionada como conferencista para el 25º aniversario de HTI!
BPFNA Interim Executive Director Doris Garcia Rivera has been selected as a lecturer to present as part of the Hispanic Theological Initiative’s (HTI) 25th Anniversary celebration. Doris’s lecture is titled Soaring into the Night: Remapping the theological star chart / Remontando la noche: Dibujando un otro mapa estelar teológico and will be presented Monday, March 22 at 6:30 PM Eastern over Zoom. Register here.
To celebrate its 25th Anniversary, HTI will be launching virtual initiatives throughout the year. Part of this will include consortium member schools sponsoring Zoom lectures to make it possible for more people to attend. Sponsored by Princeton Theological Seminary, Doris’s presentation is part of a three-lecture series titled: The Role of Religious Institutions in the Future of American Society: Interdisciplinary Approaches from Latinx Perspectives. Other presenters in the series include Dr. Eric Barreto and Dr. Gerardo Marti.
“It is an honor to be a part of this program. HTI is currently working on nurturing its third generation of scholars who are changing the landscape of theological and religious education. What a milestone to celebrate for this 25th Anniversary!,” said Doris Garcia Rivera. “In my lecture, I wanted to use the imagery presented in a Zapatista cosmogonic myth, yet reinterpreted. Using the imagery of 'La Noche... la noche es nuestra,' at the periphery of theological academic discourses, this presentation 'apalabra' (gives word) to the present social challenges and provides suggestions to center the Hispanic theological thinking, stories and experiences to remap the theological horizon.”
HTI works to cultivate Latinx PhD students across the United States by uniting and leveraging institutional resources for successful outcomes. It does this through the goals of increasing the recruitment, retention and graduation rates of Latinx PhD students; increasing the presence of Latinx leaders and faculty in seminaries, theological institutes and universities; and providing spaces for the exchange of ideas and information between Latinx students and faculty.
In addition to this lecture opportunity, BPFNA is continuing its relationship with HTI through hosting an intern who will help to build up our online resources for children and youth. Jasmin Figueroa, a Princeton Theological Seminary graduate who is pursuing her PhD at Boston University, will be with BPFNA for a year from May 2021-May 2022.

BPFNA-Bautistas por la Paz works to gather, equip, and mobilize peacemakers to build a culture of peace rooted in justice. We celebrate and support the peacemaking efforts being done by our members, churches and partners in our member nations of Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and United States – and beyond. We uplift the work of peacemakers by increasing visibility through our website and publications; bringing peacemakers together in regional and international gatherings; providing a variety of resources and trainings; and funding for peace projects. We acknowledge and strive to overcome the histories of oppression, which have distorted life within our families and churches even as they have in our nations and the larger world. BPFNA-Bautistas por la Paz also actively connects with peacemakers from other traditions, faith-based and secular, to build alliances and unite toward a common goal of witnessing to God’s peace rooted in justice and working together until it comes.
